Make sure you bookmark the Scholarship Page as new scholarships are coming in almost daily. Check it at least once a week to stay current! All applications should be available online or via download. See Mrs. Schwartz if you have any problems accessing scholarship applications!
Now that you and your parent have a PIN #, it’s time to start completing the FAFSA online. Visit the FAFSA website to start your new application for the 2014-2015 school year. Remember to have your FAFSA completed by March 1, 2014 to be guaranteed consideration for financial aid. For tips on completing the FAFSA visit http://midmich.financialaidtv.com/

Seniors! It is time to apply for your PIN # for the FAFSA. Both you and a parent need to apply for one. It is your electronic signature for submission of the FAFSA, which can be started January 1. Go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply. Have your (and your parent’s) name, birth date, and social security number handy when applying. It only takes minutes and will get you a head start on FAFSA completion. Keep in mind the deadline for the FAFSA is March 1, 2014!!
Starting January 1, 2014, the online FAFSA will be available for students to complete and submit to determine eligibility for financial aid for the 2014-2015 school year. It is highly recommended that parents file taxes before submitting the FAFSA to ensure that all information is accurate and complete. There is now a data retrieval button that links the FAFSA to tax information on the IRS website to help make this process smoother and easier for students and parents. Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting the FAFSA is March 1, 2014 so parents are encouraged to file taxes as early as possible.
PLEASE NOTE: The Internal Revenue Service announced Tuesday; they won’t start processing returns until at least January 28, 2014 and possibly as late as February 4, 2014 instead of the planned start date of January 21st. Yes, this could delay tax refunds for early filers by one or two weeks but it also effects students completing the FAFSA!
FAFSA filing traditionally begins January 1 and students are encouraged to begin filling out as much information as possible. However, the IRS data retrieval will not be available until after February 4. This could could cause delays for students and some verification issues for financial aid offices. Below is a link to an article from USA Today that sheds some light on the effects the shutdown is having on the IRS. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/2013/10/22/tax-season-delayed/3152091/
Please plan accordingly!
Seniors, representatives from your favorite colleges will be here to visit throughout the months of September and October. A sign-up sheet is available in the Counseling Office. Space is limited and this year you will only be allowed to sign up to see 3 Rep.’s. See Mrs. Schwartz ASAP to secure your spot!
Seniors, it’s that time of year…..time to apply to college! My recommendation to you is to come up with 3-5 colleges that are of interest. Some factors to consider are cost, location, size, etc. Make sure they have the program you want before submitting an application. Most colleges these days prefer that you apply online – it’s faster, easier, and often times free or discounted, so check out the school’s website before mailing in a hard copy application. The above link, New! College Applications, lists Michigan 2 and 4 year college websites. The link should take you directly to the school’s online application to make applying even easier. If you have questions, or need help, please come and see me! After you have applied, you will need to request a transcript, which can be done at www.parchment.com. Again, electronic submissions of transcripts are easier and faster. For all of your college application needs, you can also click on the side link College Planning.
